Job Title: Creative Producer

Responsible to: Creative Production Director 

Place of Work: Backyard Cinema, Capital Studios, Wandsworth

Hours of Work: 40 Hours per-week, including occasional evenings and weekends

Contract type: Permanent

Salary: £35,000 per-annum

Start Date: As soon as practicable.

Overview 

Backyard Cinema is looking for a talented Creative Producer to join their fast-growing Creative Production team for 2022 with scope to extend beyond. This role will be based at Backyard Cinema’s Capital Studios venue in Wandsworth, which is not only home to two large immersive cinema screens (which change themes seasonally) but it also boasts a large communal drinking area, a live entertainment stage, cocktail bar, street food and more.

 

As Creative Producer you will be a key member of the Creative Production team working to develop our immersive Cinema Experiences from a kernel of an idea through to realisation. With responsibility over line producing all Backyard Cinema’s immersive cinema experiences, you will be part of a small, dedicated in-house team, working closely with the Creative Production Director on each phase of Backyard Cinema’s immersive cinema experiences. You will also work across developing and managing the programming strategy for the Live Stages at Backyard Cinema.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Producing 

  • To provide day to day management of Backyard Cinema’s producing function – supporting the Creative Production Director in ensuring that all Immersive Cinema Experiences and work at Backyard Cinema is produced and presented with high quality production values and in the best possible circumstances.
  • To work with the Creative Production Director on negotiations of contracts with creative appointments, writers’ commissions (where appropriate) and the engagement of actors and subsequently contracting all freelance production staff. 
  • To liaise with the Associate Director on the engagement of visiting directors and casting agents on the management of casting for productions, carrying out all availability checks, arranging meetings and putting in offers (availability checks and arranging meetings where necessary).
  • To draw up rehearsal, production and performance schedules for productions and projects in conjunction with the Production Manager.
  • Devising and agreeing budget for Immersive Cinema Production with the Creative Production Director for individual productions and across each season. With the Production Manager, monitoring and authorising all production related expenditure, ensuring overspending does not occur. 
  • To anticipate and manage artistic needs within the constraints of schedules and budgets.
  • To support the Production Manager to ensure that the Immersive Cinema Experiences have the relevant technical support. 
  • To act as the point person between departments in the day-to-day management of productions and to ensure efficient operation between the Immervie Cinema Productions and the wider venue.
  • To attend all production meetings and chair in the event of the absence of the Creative Production Director.
  • To attend and contribute to creative meetings, production R&D sessions and script readings and immersive productions under discussion. 
  • To attend previews, including tech notes sessions, preview meetings, press nights and last nights, as well as any other company events as required. 
  • On occasion to provide producing support for the work of other departments, including Marketing, PR and Private Hires.
  • Contribute relevant expertise to departmental planning, strategy and reporting and to work across the organisation maintaining strong departmental and cross department/project communication networks.

 

Programming

  • Programming shows into Backyard Cinema’s live stages.
  • Negotiating deals with agents, acts and artists.
  • Maintaining a good knowledge of a wide range of performing arts, including comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, theatre and family shows.
  • Having an understanding of technical requirements, and what shows work well in what spaces.
  • Thinking creatively about ways to attract new talent and curating to ensure the best and most diverse programmes.
  • Drawing up contracts.
  • Acting as a point of contact for artists and external producers and promoters, including attending shows at Backyard Cinema’s venues.
  • Troubleshooting external companies’ problems, and acting as a liaison between external companies and different departments within Backyard Cinema.
  • Managing venue diaries.
  • Building strong and lasting relationships with companies, promoters and producers.

 

Personal Specification:

 

Essential

  • An affinity for the mission, vision and work of the Backyard Cinema and a passion to play a key role in shaping and achieving the company’s success.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience as Producer of new writing, immersive theatre or film.
  • Experience of working directly with creative teams and facilitating artistic processes.
  • Experience of contract negotiation with agents and artists and a good working knowledge of the relevant contracts.
  • Strong financial skills including drafting and managing budgets.
  • Excellent organisation and planning skills with proven ability to work flexibly under pressure, to prioritise and to meet deadlines.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and form effective partnerships internally and externally.
  • Persuasive communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-focused environment.

 

Desirable:

  • Good relationships with promoters and producers.
  • Experience of working within a festival or pop-up environment.
  • Experience of producing or programming shows into a festival or venue.
